Dropped kerbs are a separate approval
Your driveway is private work on your land. The dropped kerb (vehicle crossing) over the pavement is on the public highway. In East Sussex the homeowner applies to East Sussex Highways, and if the licence is granted, the crossing is built by a contractor from their approved list. Work across the pavement must be done by a contractor on East Sussex Highways’ approved list. Check this before booking the crossing.
Planning: check before you order anything
East Sussex Highways asks three questions: is the road an A, B or C road, is the house in a conservation area, and will rainwater run off the drive instead of staying on your land? If any answer is yes, you may need planning permission first. Hastings Borough Council and Rother District Council both publish their own guidance — links below.
Where the water goes
Rainwater from a new drive must be dealt with on your own land, not sent onto the road. We design the falls and drainage for your plot during the site visit, before we price.
