This is an estimate, not a quote. It's built from the same rates we work to, but the site itself decides the real number: how deep we have to dig before we find something that will take a sub-base, what the ground does after rain, where the water has to go, whether a lorry can get near the house, and what has to come out first. On Gault Clay the dig is often deeper than people expect. We only give a fixed price after we've stood on the ground.

How the range is worked out
No black box. The calculator does exactly this, in this order — and the same arithmetic appears on the PDF breakdown you can download after a run.
Step one — the rate band
Each surface has a low and a high £/m². The low end assumes a simple shape, few cuts and a mid-range product. The high end assumes curves and radii, more cutting, and a clay or permeable block. Both ends include the full build-up we quote to — dig, membrane, compacted sub-base, laying course, edgings haunched in concrete.
Step two — your area
The band is multiplied by the square metres. Presets are typical sizes, not measurements — a single car space is roughly 15–20m². Above 400m² the rate per square metre usually comes down, so the calculator says so rather than pretending otherwise.
Step three — ground and access
Two multipliers, applied to the subtotal. What's there now: grass, soil or borders ×1, old gravel or hardcore ×1.03, old slabs or block paving ×1.12, concrete or tarmac ×1.3. Access: ×1, ×1.07, ×1.2 from a straight run off the road, through a tight entrance, to a barrow run with no lorry access. Breaking out concrete or tarmac is the single biggest swing on a driveway price.
Step four — fixed additions
Drainage is added as a flat figure rather than a rate, because that's how it costs: linear channel drain across the threshold £600, new soakaway (no permeable surface) £850. A permeable surface often removes the need for either.
Step five — the minimum
Our minimum job value is £1,500. It is never applied silently — if your range falls under it the calculator tells you, because mobilising a team, a digger and a skip costs much the same at 10m² as it does at 40m².
What changes the total most
- SurfaceThe widest lever. Gravel to porcelain is a threefold difference per square metre.
- RemovalConcrete or tarmac coming out costs more than grass going away — a 30% swing.
- AccessIf everything is barrowed and nothing is craned or tipped, add up to 20%.
- WaterA channel drain or a soakaway is a fixed cost, not a rate — it barely moves on a large drive and it dominates a small one.
- GroundThe one thing the calculator cannot see. On Gault Clay the dig is often deeper than people expect, and that is decided on site, not on a form.
